GW/SW-001 – Pen y Fan

Latitude: N 51° 53' 03", Longitude: W 3° 26' 12"
Grid Reference : SO012216

QTH Locator: IO81gv
Trig Point: TP1610 Brecon Beacons (destroyed)
WAB: SO02
Nearest Post Code: LD3 8NL
Height: 886m

Elevation/Distance: 476m of ascent over a distance of ~3.1km. A reasonably easy climb.
Time to ascend: ~50 minutes
Parking options: Theres a slip road/car park at Pont ar Daf off the A470 (SN987198) but visitors park on the verge of the A470 either side of Pont ar Daf. You can alternatively park at The Storey Arms Centre about 600m further north on the A470 and take an alternative, slightly longer path up. This is handy for climbing Fan Fawr (GW/SW-005) too. The car park has toilets and food vans.

The path is very well made up, wide and reasonably flat. At about 810m the path north splits at a cairn and climbers can opt to ascend Corn Du (to the left) or head straight for Pen y Fan (to the right).

The summit has no appreciable cover and is very, very busy. The activation area is quite large which enables some separation from the crowds but it's noisy and has a lot of dogs/children running wild so guy lines can be at risk.

This summit can easily be paired up with Fan Fawr (GW/SW-005) for a double activation.
